Years 5 & 6

Year 5 and 6 – Summer Term 2026

As we start the Summer Term, we would just like to thank everyone for supporting our school Motto:

‘Together with Christ Everyone Achieves More’

The curriculum in Year 5 and 6 this term:

The unit is called ‘Greece Lightning'.

We know that last term was busy, but concluded for the Easter break after the school attending a Stations of the Cross service.

We hope that you have all had a restful break and that the children are ready to begin the final term of Year 5 or 6 for this academic year.

For some pupils, year 6, it is their final term as pupils in St Mary and St Benedict CP School! This term will be busy with assessments for all children as well as a carefully planned curriculum. Please check the school calendar on the school website or the Y56 Learning leaflet for further information. We thank you for your ongoing support.

Welcome to the Summer Term!

Our Topic this term is "Greece Lightning!"

As part of this topic we will be investigating the ancient civilisation of Greece. We will be investigating Ancient Greek religion and beliefs along with: myths and legends, everyday life, story telling through pottery and the role of sport. We will be hosting a Greek day too…details TBC.

As usual, we will continue to provide quality first teaching in the core subjects of English, Maths and RE in the morning sessions as well as all other subjects during the afternoon sessions. We will continue to have Mr Fox supporting the music curriculum (ukulele) this term and Mr Evans will be leading our PE sessions. PE days – Tuesday and Friday.

Please make sure that your child has an appropriate PE kit:

* black shorts/black tracksuit bottoms

* White t-shirt

* pumps - waterproof preferably

* black/purple sweater for outside sport

Further Information:

We are planning enhancement activities within school to ensure the curriculum motivates and engages all learners.

The Year 5&6 Learning Leaflets will be sent home with your child. It contains the curriculum outline and also a list of dates for your diary for the first half of the Summer Term. As previously mentioned, please check the diary on the school website for further updates.

The first half of the Summer term is especially busy for the pupils in Year 6 as SAT week is from Monday May 11th – Thursday May 14th. The children in Year 6 will sit assessments in Reading, Grammar & Spelling and Mathematics over the 4 days. We ask that to help ensure your child is thoroughly prepared that they have plenty of sleep, eat a good breakfast and arrive at school for 8.30am during SAT week.

In the run up to this week, please help your child:

* Learn their spellings - the Y5&6 list - which is in the reading diary.

* Listen to them read daily and ask them questions about the text - this helps them process information and engage with new vocabulary.

* Test them on their multiplication knowledge to ensure quick recall of facts.

* revisit their revision books

If your child is in Year 6 and you require any SAT Information, please ask any member of Year 5&6 staff and they will be able to help you.

Year 5 parents, if you could also help your child with their spellings, listen to them read and test them on their quick multiplication recall, this will assist them in their journey to Year 6. Year 5 pupils will complete assessment tasks throughout this term.

This will be a busy term, so we thank you in advance for your help and co-operation.
